MAKE EARLY EDUCATION A JOYFUL EXPERIENCE
FOR BOTH CHILD AND ADULT
Make learning meaningful by integrating the content of all subjects around your child's interests.
The key is to start with your child's interests and help locate relevant resources. There are no rigid divisions between subjects. Subject content can be combined holistically. For example, reading, math, science, reading, research, writing, history, social-emotional skills, music, movement, and art may be combined around a particular topic of a child's interest or concept.
With this approach, learning will be logical, engaging and enjoyable for your child, leading to even more meaningful learning.
As a parent of a spirited child, life can be both challenging and amazing!
I lived this firsthand as my son was a spirited child who was diagnosed with ADHD, depression, and oppositional defiant disorder by third grade. Though his intelligence was above average, he struggled in the regular, traditional classroom environment throughout school. He had every grade known to humankind on his report cards. If one subject went up, another went down, like bobbing corks on the water. If he liked his teacher, he excelled. If he didn't, his grades would plummet. It felt as if we were riding a roller coaster each school year.
I was teaching kindergarten in public schools for 12 years during this time. Many of my students were, like my son, spirited children. Early on I learned that my approach to teaching had to match the energy and interests of the children. Worksheets and workbooks were either too easy or too hard for children. Children in elementary classrooms were expected to sit still for inappropriately long periods, creating boredom, anger, and behavioral issues in the classroom. Programs pushed into our schools were a one-sized-fits-none curriculum. Teachers and children were frustrated, and it impacted the spirited children especially hard.
I had to make the choice. Would I leave teaching altogether or would I continue to innovate and individualize to meet the needs of my students, and risk being fired due to not following a rigid curriculum? Thankfully, the school counselor asked me to head the gifted education program for K-2 students.
I researched with professors and other experts to design identification procedures and curriculum for gifted students for our campus. I attended numerous workshops for educators of gifted children, read as many books about ADHD and gifted education as I could find over the next few years, and became certifed in gifted education. Students labeled "behavioral problems" in the regular classrooms were the children I sought out to assess for the gifted program. Many of them qualified. I continued teaching and designing curriculum as an assistant gifted program coordinator over the next 4 years, and trained teachers in identifying and modifying curriculum for their ADHD and gifted students. I loved teaching these wonderfully intense children and mentoring their parents!
My own son who had struggled in the regular classroom was gifted. Many children with ADHD traits share characteristics of gifted children. Rather than "ADHD", or "gifted", "spirited children" seems a better descriptor as they are intense, spirited and full of wonder about the world, delving deeply into their passions.
Spirited children can become leaders and excel in any profession of choice as adults if instructed in the way they naturally learn. My spirited son became VP of a major cellphone company and is now an entrepreneur developing his own software company.
Spirited children can become wildly successful!
If any of this sounds familiar to you, you are certainly not alone. You can learn tools to help your spirited child achieve in all subject areas and learn social-emotional skills, whether your child attends public or private schools or is homeschooled.
I am here to offer my assistance and together we'll celebrate their successes!
